To become one with Jesus Christ, a person must be willing not only to give up sin, but also to surrender his whole way of looking at things. – Oswald Chambers
Giving up my sin, in a way, is understandable. Why would I want to keep sinning against the Lord? I desire purity and wholeness. But, it is quite another thing to surrender my way of looking at things. Subtly I can become absorbed by my way of seeing.
Not only must I give up my interpretations of life but I must also surrender how my life is lived. The Lord’s way is adventurous; how easy it is to only focus on potential personal risk. When I do, I walk away from Him. I must never try to live with God in any other way than His way, with His perspective.
And His way means absolute devotion to Him. Showing no concern for the uncertainties that lie ahead is the secret of walking with Jesus. – Oswald Chambers
My life must be a holy example of the reality of God’s message. For this to happen He takes me beyond my own aspirations and ideas for my life. I am shaped by the truth to become the outward reality of the truth. Therefore, I must entrust everything entirely to Him and watch that when He brings me to His venture, I take it.
I must guard against losing His perspective because of my own lack of spiritual growth and impatience. I cannot bring God’s vision to fulfillment through my own efforts, but must live under its inspiration until He fulfills it Himself.
In the setting of the rich man who would not give up himself for Christ (Mark 10) Peter spoke up. “We’ve given up everything to follow you…” (Verse 28). Why the announcement? Rather than grieving over the decisions of the rich man, Peter talks of himself and the others. I tend to do that as well. I’m so glad that I am not like that creeps into my heart. Beware of surrender that is motivated by personal benefits that may result. When this is my motivation, I stop living with God’s perspective.
Lord, I must surrender my way of looking at things. I must also surrender how my life is lived. It is my desire to be a living reality of Your truth. Help me to patiently live under Your inspiration, Your perspective. Help me entrust everything entirely to You and watch that when You bring me to Your venture, I take it. Help me give myself to You in the same way You gave Yourself for me— totally, unconditionally, and without reservation.
