A chance to die

Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “There will be peace and security in my days.” – Isaiah 39:8

And so in the matter of the envoys of the princes of Babylon, who had been sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land, God left him to himself, in order to test him and to know all that was in his heart. – 2 Chronicles 32:31

How can this be? Hezekiah, greatly blessed by God, healed by God and given an additional fifteen years irresponsibly thinks only of himself. He failed God’s test. Told that all his property and even his sons would be carried into Babylon, he concludes that he will have peace and security.

How am I like him? Is my heart after the Lord alone? Or, does there still remain too much of me? Death of self is sometimes very slow. Amy Charmichael said, “See in everything a chance to die.”

Lord, I am to come to you and die to really live. This is is harder than I want it to be but I desire it. If you ever test me on this, may I pass the test. May my heart be filled with You!
